Reels & Hot Wheels Bus Stop, Rt. 66, Albuquerque, NM
Scale: 18 feet high ~ Materials: Steel, aluminum, solar panels, programmed LED lighting
This iconic bus shelter, fashioned as an old movie reel, honors the original theater directly behind it. The shelter’s seats are designed as movie sprockets and the trash can is a movie spool. Next to the bus shelter is a stand-alone sculpture of two Red Hot Wheels designed as sixes, with illuminated flames shooting out the end.
The transportation stop captures the essence and nostalgia for Route 66, “The Mother Road.” Solar powered rooftop panels provide shelter and power to the sequential LED light fixtures inside the hollow "Hot Wheels."
A Personal Story
It's always great to hear about your work from community leaders and stakeholders, like the ones who orchestrated a fabulous "grand opening" for their new sculptural bus stop.
But the best is when you hear from kids, like the ones who said our maquette looked "cool!" Or asked if there would be ice cream at the opening! It's when a local dance troup joyously performs at the sculpture. It's when people who take the bus proudly sit in a special place as they wait for their rides.
Route 66 truly is The Mother Road, the road that takes us all on new adventures.
